SEPTA Papal Passes Go On Sale Via Online Lottery

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- SEPTA began selling Regional Rail passes for the papal visit via an online lottery Monday morning.

The passes went on sale 12:01 a.m. on the transit agency's website. Customers can log on to the site for a link to purchase up to ten papal passes.

To request the passes you select travel dates, preferred regional rail stations and provide a valid email.

The lottery ends at 11:59 p.m. Monday. Technology will be used to weed out suspicious and duplicate requests. Valid entries will be put into a database, and winners will be selected at random.

Supply is limited to 350,000 passes. The lucky winners will receive an email on Thursday with a link to purchase their passes.

This is SEPTA's second attempt to sell the passes. The first attempt failed when high demand crashed the website.
