Police Pursuit Through South Jersey, Philadelphia Ends

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Chopper 3 was over the scene as police pursued a vehicle through South Jersey and Philadelphia.

The pursuit lasted for about two hours and went back and forth between two states.

It began just after 7:30 p.m. Monday in New Jersey.

Eyewitness News is told Oaklyn police in Camden County were following a vehicle where the occupant was wanted for a robbery.

The van headed to Philadelphia, where police say the vehicle struck two patrol cars.

Police say the vehicle then traveled over the Walt Whitman Bridge to New Jersey.

After driving through Camden, the vehicle drove around the parking lot at the Deptford Mall in Deptford Township, Gloucester County.

Just after 9 p.m., through the toll and crossing the Benjamin Franklin Bridge into Philadelphia, the van nearly came to a stop at mid-span.

The pursuit went through Old City, then continued onto Columbus Boulevard southbound from Spring Garden Street.

At about 9:25 p.m., police continued to follow the vehicle southbound on I-95.

It appeared police had boxed the vehicle in near Exit 17 Broad Street/Pattison Ave. in South Philadelphia, but the van continued on.

The van eventually exited I-95 south near Philadelphia International Airport.

Police used a pit maneuver and the van rolled onto a service road.

Police say the male was taken to the hospital for treatment.

"He'll be charged here in Philadelphia county with three counts of aggravated assault against Philadelphia police officers," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker.

Authorities identified the driver as Robert Ritter. They say he was wanted on an armed robbery warrant from Brooklawn, Camden County.

"He will be extradited at some point over to New Jersey after we take care of these Philly charges," said Lt. Walker.
