Phillies Fans Cheer For Hamels As He Throws First Solo No-Hitter

By Kristen Johanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For many Phillies fans, there hasn't been much to cheer about recently, but that changed Saturday night, as Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels threw his first solo no-hitter.

The crowd inside Manayunk Tavern got quiet in the 9th inning, watching the tense moments of Hamels pitching to a cubs player. A pop of the ball, a catch by an outfielder and a roar of the crowd, including super fan mike.

"Watching them tough it through, go through a hundred pitches, up to one hundred and twenty pitches." said Mike. "Phenomenal seeing them making it all the way through and getting that in."

Marianne and Tony came in from Flourtown to sip a few brews and watch the game.

"The game was on in the background, we were kind of watching, we were happy they had a lead." said Marianna. "It was about the 7th inning when I said 'wait a minute, it's a no hitter!' and it got really exciting after that."

This is the 13th no-hitter game in the team's history. Roy Halladay pitched the last one in 2010 against the Cincinatti Reds, and hometown fan Tony was there to watch in person.

"I did see the Roy Halladay NLCS no-hitter, it's amazing to watch some one pitching in perfection.

Mike says this was just as sweet

"This was a nice surprise because the Phillies havent been doing good, so the true Phillies fans are the ones who are catching this."

Tony says win or lose, he's always a hopeful Phillies fan.

"The passion of the summer is baseball." said Tony. "So unfortunately I don't think it's going to electrify the fans, but the young guys, we do have a future."
