Camden Man Arrested After Trying To Disarm Officer

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) – A man was arrested Tuesday after he approached an officer from behind and grabbed his gun in its holster and threatened to take it.

Officer Robert Shea was assisting another officer around 3:15 Tuesday afternoon near the corner of Louis and Chase streets in Camden when Barry Best, 34, walked up behind the officer and grabbed his gun and tried to remove it from the holster.

As he attempted to remove the gun, Best said to the officer that he was trying to take his gun. Officer Shea showed restraint while acting quickly to immediately arrest Best and defuse a highly dangerous situation.

Deputy Police Chief Joseph Williams said Officer Shea handled the situation well, minimizing any future conflicts on the scene.

"Officer Shea reacted exactly as he should have and was able to peacefully and safely resolve the situation," said Williams. "It is a testament to the continual training provided to officers on how to react properly in life-threatening situations."

Best was charged with attempt to disarm a law enforcement officer.
