Teens Interested In Pursuing Career In Veterinary Medicine Participate In Program On Univ. Of Pennsylvania's Campus

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Teens interested in pursuing a possible career in veterinary medicine are participating in a program this week on the University of Pennsylvania's campus.
High school students in the summer camp looked on as patient Mr. Lucky the cockatiel was getting a physical exam and blood work done.
"In the past he has had history of having a lot of fat in his blood stream so we want to just keep track of that make sure he doesn't develop disease like heart disease and arteriosclerosis. He also has always has a little bit of a over grown beak since he was adopted so he came in today to just get that trimmed up," said Penn Vet exotic animal medicine specialist Dr. Nicole Wyre.

The students in the week-long program are exposed to various areas of veterinary medicine including anatomy, pathology and research.
"I figured there is a lot of different areas you could work in veterinary medicine I didn't know that before," said high school student from Texas.
Various camps for high school and college students interested in science careers are taking place this summer at the University of Pennsylvania's health schools.
