Police Cracking Down After Curbs Painted Yellow At Jersey Shore Town

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J., (CBS) -- Like most shore towns, summer parking is at a premium in Sea Isle City, New Jersey but over the years some homeowners have exercised a creative, albeit illegal, solution – painting the curbs yellow to trick drivers not to park in front of their properties.

Recently, Sea Isle Police got complaints from people wrongfully given tickets because of illegitimate yellow lines. This spring, the city went out to cover the yellow with gray and found almost 300 violations, ranging from 1 to 45 feet of illegal paint.

"People do save themselves some parking spots in front of their homes with these painted curbs," said Sea Isle City Police Captain Anthony Garreffi.

In some areas of Sea Isle, the illegal painting has gone from annoying to absurd. Right here the curb was painted yellow, the city went grey, then they went golden, and the city went gray again, but officials tell CBS 3 Eyewitness News they're not playing games.

"There were 27 that were repainted by someone and the property owners were issued citations for that," said Captain Garreffi.

Fines start in the $120-range and go up.

Enforcement on illegal curb painting is now ongoing.
