Police Chase In Delaware Ends With Fatal Crash

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) – A vehicle fleeing Wilmington Police collided with a school bus on Tuesday. Authorities say the driver of the fleeing vehicle was declared dead on the scene, while the school bus driver was transported to the hospital. The 56-year-old school bus driver was listed in stable condition with a leg injury.

Police observed a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu driving erratically on Tuesday. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver of the car ignored the request and fled.

After pursuing the vehicle, officers relocated the man driving on the 800 block of Delaware Avenue. The driver had reached that point by crossing the median from the westbound side of 12th Street.

That was the point where the school bus was struck by the car. No children were on the bus at the time of the collision.

New Castle County Paramedics declared the driver deceased after their arrival on the scene. The driver was identified as an 18-year-old male.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Wilmington Police's Traffic Division at 302-571-4415.
