Raccoon That Bit Woman in South Jersey Tests Positive For Rabies

By David Madden

MARLTON, N.J. (CBS) -- Health authorities in Burlington County, NJ confirm that a raccoon tested positive for rabies this week.  The animal was destroyed and a woman exposed to it is getting shots as a precaution.

Police in Marlton say the unidentified woman lives in the Kings Grant apartment complex. Test results on the bite are not yet in.

Burlington County spokesman Eric Arpert says the county wants to take no chances, given the potential danger of rabies.  But, he adds, there is no need for area residents to panic.

"If anybody has been scratched or bitten by a wild animal or stray cats or dogs in the neighborhood in the last month or so, please contact the health department," he advises.

He says it's also a good idea to check your pet's vaccination records, particularly if they wander outside, because it may need a booster shot.
