Pedestrian Struck, Killed By SEPTA Bus

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Police in Center City are investigating a deadly accident involving a SEPTA bus and a pedestrian.

Around one this morning police say a SEPTA bus hit a man at 11th and Walnut. But Chief Inspector Scott Small says the bus kept going.

"Apparently the SEPTA bus driver did not even know that he struck a pedestrian."

Small says the Route 23 bus kept going for about five blocks.

"A cab driver who saw the accident happened to notify a uniformed police officer at the intersection of 11th and Vine," Small says.

That's where 6th district police is located. Officers pulled the bus over and told the driver what happened.

"The bus driver was not impaired in any way," says Small. "The SEPTA bus driver fully cooperated with police."

The man who was hit died at the hospital from chest injuries. Small says he's possibly in his 50s, but he did not have any ID on him and was possibly homeless.

Charges are unlikely at the moment, and Small called this a "tragic accident."
