Sharks Scare Off A Few July 4th Weekend NJ Beachgoers -- But Most, No Way!

By Andrew Kramer

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) - The ocean was packed with people enjoying a beautiful end to Fourth of July weekend in Ocean City Sunday, despite recent shark attacks and sightings up and down the east coast.

Experts have said sharks pose a little threat to swimmers at the Jersey Shore, but that didn't stop some beachgoers from being extra cautious.

In fact, Mark from Royersford says he stayed out of the ocean completely:

"Well I don't go in the water much anymore. You go out here and you hear all these stories and it's just waist-deep water a lot of these people get bitten and I'm like, no I'm not touching it."

Rosey from Mantua was one of many in Ocean City who ventured into the water.

"I think people are just a little more cautious about it, but I think everybody is just rest assured it's nothing major in Ocean City," she says.

While she did go for a swim, sharks were on her mind as well:

"I'm not going to lie, I've been in the water, but I haven't been the furthest one out like I normally am."

Nick, who was visiting from California, says while aware of the shark threat, that didn't stop him:

"Yea I've been hearing a little bit about it, but everybody else seems to be alive, so I guess I'm gonna keep on going."

And like Nick, Lauren and her husband, Tim, didn't let sharks stand in the way of their fun:

"It doesn't bother me at all," Lauren says. "I know there's sharks in there and I don't really think anything of it."

"Sharks live in the ocean," adds Tim.

But when asked what they would do if they actually saw a shark, everyone had a similar response:

"Run!"
