Pressure Builds On Christie To Declare Disaster In Wake Of Tuesday's Storms
By David Madden
TRENTON, NJ (CBS) -- The Christie Administration is pondering a possible disaster declaration in the wake of Tuesday's storm in sections of South Jersey, which would open the door to potential federal aid in the recovery effort.
State officials were surveying parts of Camden and Gloucester Counties yesterday, even as local politicians called for action from the Governor. Camden County is considering making its own disaster declaration if Christie doesn't.
Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez says, "We're talking about 85 mile per hour winds. This is beyond hurricane weather. So the damage was indeed very devastating."
They're submitting damage estimates to Trenton, hoping to get Christie to act quickly.
Senate President Steve Sweeney, along with local Assemblymen John Burzichelli and Adam Taliaferro, are also calling for a state probe on utility response to the storm, suggesting it could have been better.
