NJ Senate Considers Bill Authorizing Sale Of Home-baked Goods

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey residents could soon be allowed to sale baked goods made at home.

The state Senate's Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee considered a bill Monday that permits residents to sell home-baked goods. They would have to have a placard indicating the items were baked in a kitchen and were not subject to inspection by the state Health Department.

This measure is aimed at exempting home bakers from regulations generally required of commercial bakers.

State Sen. Christopher "Kip" Bateman says 47 other states have similar laws and says the measure would allow hobbyists to earn extra money.

The panel only discussed and did not vote on the bill.

The measure passed the Assembly unanimously in May 2014.
