New Study Looks At Performance At Community College Of Philadelphia

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new report says Community College of Philadelphia has returned mixed results when it comes to helping students earn degrees and job skills.

The report by The Pew Charitable Trusts says the college has had varied success, while charging a comparatively higher tuition.

"When compared to similar institutions nationwide, this college has had a mixed record on helping students obtain degrees and marketable skills," says study author Thomas Ginsberg.

Ginsberg says last year CCP produced the highest number of graduates in its 50-year history. But they went on to earn bachelors degrees at a rate at or below similar schools.

The report also says the school falls short in workforce development. CCP President Donald Generals says the report paints a fair picture:

"Many of those factors we've already recognized through our own data and our own research, and we will continue to improve. Our goal is to be the best community college in the country."

The report says African-American and Asian students at CCP have done better than their peers at other colleges, on average.
