Pinterest Joining Online Wave of 'Buy It Now' Sites

By KYW social media editor Melony Roy

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (CBS) -- "Buyable" pins are coming to Pinterest.

Users of the online social scrapbooking service Pinterest will soon be able to buy items directly through the company's app, using a new type of pin.

Brands such as Kate Spade, Macy's, and Cole Haan will soon offer Pinterest posts with a "buy it" button.  Users will be able to select a size and color of the item in the app, and the merchant will ship the product.

Users can pay for the items they buy with Apple Pay or a credit card.

The shoppable pins have been expected for some time. The network's 70 million monthly visitors use the service as a digital pinboard for planning events, home design, and fashion.

The company says it will roll out the "Buy It" button in the coming weeks and  more than two million products on the network will be instantly buyable.

The announcement of the new pins comes just as Instagram unveiled its own version of shoppable posts and Google has confirmed it is preparing to launch its own version.
