WPHT's Rich Zeoli Talks With NJ Assemblyman About Self-Serve Gas Station Proposal

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- New Jersey Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon is championing a proposal to allow drivers in the state to pump their own gas at self-service gas stations.

O'Scanlon told Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that self-service will lower prices at the pump.

"We've spoken to the fuel industry, we've looked at other states and yes, full-serve is typically more expensive than self-serve. That's because self-serve is a much less expensive product to deliver because of the obvious expense savings. For self-serve gas, we should see eight to ten cents a gallon savings."

He also stated that full-service will not be going away anytime soon, if at all.

"This bill isn't about switching from full-service to self-service. It's about choice. We even mandate that every gas station has to have at least one full-service island for at least three years. If what the opponents of this initiative are saying is true: that New Jerseyans will reject self-serve gas, then they never have to worry about it going away."

O'Scanlon dismissed claims that this initiative would damage the state's economy by costing employees of gas stations their jobs.

"If we're going to use unnecessary regulations as a job creating mechanism, where do you stop? Maybe we should mandate that you go back to the service you had 50 years ago, where four guys would come. Or maybe we should ban amazon.com and other online retailers because we may lose some brick and mortar jobs."
