Showdown Could Be Coming In AC Between Gov. Christie, Democrats

By David Madden

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) - New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney is calling out Governor Chris Christie over how to help Atlantic City recover from imminent financial peril.

Sweeney personally delivered copies of the bills now being deliberated in the legislature to Christie's office. Sweeney says Atlantic City can't wait for a possible gubernatorial veto, even a conditional one:

"He's known what the bills are for over five months. So I brought the bills down and said 'these are the bills, we need an answer -- yes or no'."

Failing to get one, he says, only makes the current situation in the resort city worse.

A spokesman for Christie re-released a statement insisting anything short of a plan developed jointly by legislators, city officials and emergency managers appointed by the Governor would "once again shortchange Atlantic City's future".
