Research Finds Gunfire Incidents In Camden, NJ Have Dropped By Nearly 50 Percent

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) -- According to recently released data, the city of Camden, New Jersey showed a 48 percent drop in gunfire incidents from 2013-2014.

"The Camden County Police Department has made extraordinary progress in Camden City. In addition to the marked decline in shootings, there were fewer victims of crime and homicides were cut by 42 percent during that same period of time," said Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.

The data released by ShotSpotter matches up with other research suggesting that the crime rate continues to drop in Camden since the county took over the police department almost two years ago.

From 2013 to 2014, the number of homicides in the city dropped by 42 percent and all violent crime fell by 21 percent.

Mayor Dana L. Redd said. "Families throughout Camden have complimented the great work the Camden County Police Department has done to bolster relationships and communication with the community to improve the quality of life in all our neighborhoods. I look forward to continue working in partnership with our residents, businesses and all levels of government to further enhance public safety initiatives in Camden."
