Research Claims Pennsylvania, Delaware Among States That Drink The Most

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – If you're still recovering from St. Patrick's Day two days after the fact, you're not alone.

At least not in the Philadelphia region.

A new roundup compiled by addiction information site RecoveryFind.com and in honor of the holiday ranked the U.S. states that drink the most, and it turns out those of us living in Pennsylvania and Delaware really enjoy our booze.

RecoveryFind used data on binge drinking from the CDC, population stats from the U.S. Census Bureau and information about businesses such as bars and liquor stores in each state to create its list.

One apparent finding? Frigid winters and binge-drinking go together like a PBR and a shot of whiskey – eight of the top 10 states with the coldest average temperatures also ranked in the top 20 states for binge-drinking!

What's more, Northerners were more likely to binge drink than residents of the South.

In our area, Delawareans are the biggest big drinkers – the state ranked in the top 20 in all three categories (14 for binge-drinking, nine for breweries and 17 for bars and liquor stores per capita).

Pennsylvania residents are also enthusiastic imbibers, coming in 15th for binge-drinking, 22nd for breweries and 12th for bars and liquor stores per capita.

Only New Jerseyans prefer to go easy on the booze, coming in 37th for binge-drinking, 22nd for bars/liquor stores and 48th for breweries.

And in case you were wondering where Americans hit the bottle the most, that dubious honor goes to Wisconsin.
