Rich Zeoli Talks To Ed Rendell About The Eagles Trade For Sam Bradford

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Rich Zeoli talked to former Governor Ed Rendell on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT about the Eagles trade for Sam Bradford and the backlash that followed from fans against Head Coach Chip Kelly.

Rendell thinks Kelly is taking a risk by making the trade, but thinks Bradford could flourish in Philadelphia.

"Chip Kelly reminds me of a riverboat gambler...It's confusing to Eagle fans. I think this really rests on how good Sam Bradford is and how much he's recovered from his injuries. Remember this was the [number one] overall pick in the draft in 2010. He was the first person chosen in the entire draft in 2010. He was considered to be the blue chip quarterback coming out of college in 2010. He had a very good rookie year and then he's been injured, pretty much, ever sense. If he recovers from his injury, if he can play to that level, if he can bloom in that offense, then I think we're going to be alright."

He still has faith in Kelly and does believe the team has gotten better over the past week.

"I still have confidence in Chip, although my confidence has, obviously, been tested by all these moves. The defense is infinitely better. There's no question about that. The defense is close to being a top tier defense in NFL in my judgement."

Rendell is hopeful the Eagles will emerge from free agency and the draft in a better position to compete for the Super Bowl.

"We've brought in some fairly high level players. Kiko Alonso was considered the best rookie defensive player in the NFL two years ago...If it all works out, I think we've got a much improved defense. If we can pick up a good wide receiver in the draft, if we sign Ryan Mathews, I think we'll have a good offense. I think Sam Bradford, if he's the Sam Bradford of his rookie season, he's an upgrade over what we had at quarterback last season."
