Fire Damages Allentown School, Giving Students A Day Off
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — First the cold kept Pennsylvania children from school. Now, in one community, it's the heat.
A fire early Tuesday at Allentown's Cleveland Elementary School gave students an unexpected day off.
Several teachers and administrators, but no students, were in the building when the fire started around 7:15 a.m.
No injuries were reported. Firefighters say they limited the bulk of the damage to a second floor teacher preparation room.
School officials say the fire also caused significant smoke damage to the second floor. They haven't said when the school will reopen.
Cleveland is one of 15 elementary schools in Allentown.
It opened as a school house in 1883 and was used as a day care from 1981-1984 before reopening as an elementary school. It's named for President Grover Cleveland.
