Music Carries a Motivational Message to a Philadelphia High School

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Two music legends visited a high school in Grays Ferry today, to share their stories and to teach students the secrets of success.

(Spoiler alert: it's hard work.)

"It's time to make school cool, said Darrell McDaniels, better know as "DMC" from the groundbreaking hip-hop group, Run-DMC.

"I just want to tell the kids, inside of you is something that was given to you for you to use to change the world," he told the students at Universal Audenreid High School.

A self-proclaimed "comic book nerd" who was bullied as a kid, he told students to create their own opportunities.

And Grammy-winning producer Kenny Gamble, who accompanied DMC today, said there are no shortcuts to the top.  The journey, he added, starts in a classroom.

"I encourage all of you to stick with it and make sure you take care of your school.  Take care of yourself and be careful. Learn as much as you can," Gamble said.

Wide-eyed senior Jamir Coates heard every word:

"Stay focused. Stay out of trouble. Keep my mind on positive things."

And most importantly, he added, never stop learning.
