Phillies' Equipment Truck Leaves For Spring Training In Florida

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The wind was really whipping Friday morning, and you could feel the cold on your flesh as soon as you stepped outside.

If ever we needed a harbinger of spring, it is now -- so we'll tell you that this morning, Phillies crews packed up their equipment truck and set sail south to sunny Clearwater, Florida for Spring Training.

What's on the truck? Thousands of baseballs, 10,000 beverage cups, and hundreds of socks, jocks and shirts, says Phils equipment manager Dan O'Rourke.

"It gets hot down there," says O'Rourke. "We have to at least think of two hats per guy, and socks and uniforms and pants -- and just everything."

Crews started loading the truck at 8 a.m. The truck left Citizens Bank Park at about 10:30 a.m., and will arrive in Florida on Sunday.

Pitchers and catchers begin workouts on Thursday in Clearwater, where it's currently about 40 degrees warmer than it is here.
