Philadelphia Police ID DUI Suspect Who Died While In Custody

By Molly Daly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Authorities have released the name of the DUI suspect who died late Friday night while in custody at Philadelphia Police headquarters.

It started with a two-car accident Friday afternoon in the 2700 block of Holme Avenue. No one appeared to be hurt, but Philadelphia police say 29 year-old Daniel Wichterman had been driving under the influence.

The Northeast Philadelphia man was arrested and taken to police headquarters at 7th and Race, and put in a cell with another man. Around 10 p.m. Friday, police say that's where Wichterman was found, unconscious. The detention unit nurse performed CPR, and paramedics were called. They transported Wichterman to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The homicide unit is investigating, which authorities say is standard procedure when someone dies in custody. Toxicology tests and an autopsy will be conducted.
