Hundreds Displaced As Massive Fire Rips Through NJ Apartment Complex

EDGEWATER, N.J. (CBS) - An apartment fire lit up the night sky Wednesday in Edgewater, New Jersey leaving hundreds of residents displaced.

Gusty winds and frigid temperatures made it difficult for firefighters to get control of the flames. Embers spread, which ignited other small fires as well.

A state of emergency has been declared in New Jersey.

Residents watched in disbelief as the building went up in flames, then later collapsed.

"When I came here it was just smoke, but I came here around 5:30 and basically it wasn't that much of a fire, but now it's horrible," says displaced resident Hamza Alkhayyat.

Smoke from the fire could even be seen across the Hudson River in Midtown Manhattan.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
