42nd Anniversary of 'Roe v. Wade' Marked by Philadelphia Pro-Choice and Anti-Abortion Groups

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Both pro-choice and anti-abortion groups today marked the anniversary of the US Supreme Court's landmark decision in the case of Roe v. Wade.

Perhaps no other decision still stirs such passions, 42 years later, from both sides of the issue.

At lunchtime today on South Broad Street in center city Philadelphia, choice proponents rallied on the median, "for maximum visibility," according to Planned Parenthood's Dayle Steinberg, who says they were both celebrating and defending the 1973 decision.

"The fight isn't over yet," she tells KYW Newsradio.  "Out-of-touch lawmakers are still trying to pass legislation and wage attacks on access to abortion services, and we're going to do everything we can to keep it safe, legal, and accessible."

Meanwhile, a contingent of Philadelphia Catholics left on buses early this morning to join an annual march in Washington, DC that prays for the decision to be reversed or gutted.

As far apart and fervent as the two sides are, Steinberg sees potential for common ground.

"The best way to reduce the need for abortion is to make all birth control options affordable and accessible," she says.
