Police: Woman Fatally Shot While Waiting For Bus In North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are investigating the deadly shooting of a woman in North Philadelphia.

The shooting took place at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at 12th and Jefferson Streets, only blocks from the campus of Temple University.

The family of 56-year-old Kim Jones is looking for answers after a woman described as hard-working and well-educated was murdered in broad daylight.

"She was just a good person," said family member Deitra Jubilee. "It's just baffling when somebody is trying to go to work, then never sees it coming. She has no enemies."

Police say Jones was waiting for a SEPTA bus to take to work. She was standing at the corner of 12th and Jefferson.

Investigators say the gunman walked up and shot her once in the back of the head.

Jones died at the scene, just a few steps away from home.

"We knew she was targeted for whatever reason. We do not believe it was a robbery," said Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark. "Someone knew her routine. Somebody knew every morning she got on that bus to go to work and ambushed her.  Who?"

"She had on headphones, she had a purse, she had jewelry, she had a cell phone, none of which was disturbed or taken," said Clark.

Jones was an employee at Turning Points for Children, where she was a program director. Her colleagues say she was an outstanding child advocate.

"I don't know how we're going to go forward. We've never had to deal with anything like this," CEO Michael Vogel told Eyewitness News.

Vogel said he personally recruited and hired Jones almost a decade ago.

According to investigators, the suspect is described as a heavy-set black male dressed in all black and carrying a duffel bag. He was last seen heading westbound on Jefferson Street.

The shooter remains on the loose.

Anyone with information on the suspect is urged to call 911 or the Philadelphia Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or 3335.

The deadly shooting remains under investigation.
