Crews Work To Repair Water Main Break In South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Crews worked for hours to repair a water main break in South Philadelphia.

The 12-inch main broke around 12:45 a.m. Monday at 19th and Federal Streets in the city's Point Breeze neighborhood.

Crews from the Philadelphia Water Department were able to contain the leak within several hours and were expected to return later in the day to finish repairs on the broken main.

Water service had to be shut off to help stem the flooding into nearby homes and businesses, impacting about 40 homes in the area.

The water department says some of the pipes on 19th Street date back to 1872 and others to 1958.

The break also caused some minor damage to the road.
