2 Officers On Administrative Leave After Suspect Is Killed During Traffic Stop In Bridgeton, NJ

BRIDGETON, N.J. (AP) — Two police officers fatally shot a man who was in a car the officers had stopped in southern New Jersey, but authorities weren’t releasing further details Wednesday other than that a handgun was recovered at the scene.

Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said Bridgeton police officers Braheme Days and Roger Worley both shot one of two people who were in the car they had stopped around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Webb-McRae said a handgun “was revealed and later recovered.” Her office did not return a call or email seeking more details on what led to the shooting of 36-year-old Jerame Reid.

The prosecutor also did not release the name of the other occupant of the car or say why the vehicle was stopped.

The two officers were placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, which is standard policy in police-involved shootings. The prosecutor’s office is investigating under a state policy for such shootings.

Witnesses said the scene was chaotic after the shooting and Reid, described as the passenger by witnesses, was shot after he was ordered to get out of the car.

Denzel Mosley, 17, said he watched the scene unfold from the attic of his house, which is on the corner of the street in front of where the shooting happened. He said both of Reid’s hands were in “plain sight” and he didn’t see a gun.

“They were telling him, ‘Get out the car,'” he said. “They (police) was like ‘Stop!’ and they started shooting.”

Reid’s cousin, Kisha Springs, said he leaves behind a 3-month-old son. On Wednesday afternoon, stuffed animals, candles and balloons were placed on and around a fence near the police shooting as a makeshift memorial to Reid.

A group of kids was playing a game of football in a grassy lot across the street from the shooting scene.
