Bridgeton Police-Involved Shooting Under Investigation

BRIDGETON, N.J., (CBS) – An investigation is underway following a fatal police-involved shooting in Bridgeton, Cumberland County.

Authorities say it happened around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday on South Avenue near Henry Street.

According to the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office, two Bridgeton Police Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of a vehicle containing two occupants and during the course of the stop, a handgun was allegedly revealed and later recovered.

The Prosecutor's Office says both officers discharged their duty weapons, resulting in the death of a 36-year-old man.

The name of the other occupant is not being released at this time.

A Use of Deadly Force investigation is being conducted by the Prosecutor's Office per New Jersey Attorney General guidelines.  The New Jersey State Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit is assisting.

An autopsy is being conducted today and results are pending.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
