Philadelphia Offering Dozens of Locations For Christmas Tree Recycling

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you are a Philadelphia resident thinking about getting rid of your Christmas tree soon, you might want to hang on to it for a while.
The city is expanding its tree recycling program this year.
The Philadelphia Streets Department will begin accepting Christmas trees, with all decorations removed, on January 5th, at four trash "convenience centers."
Those locations are the 3000 block of South 63rd Street, Domino Lane and Umbria Street, State Road and Ashburner, and 2601 West Glenwood Avenue.
"In the past we've collected them at our drop-off locations," says deputy streets commissioner Donald Carlton. "This year we're expanding to have 23 additional drop-off locations on Saturday, January 10th, and also Saturday, January 17th."
Trees that are recycled are used as compost at city parks and landscapes. More information on the 23 tree drop-off locations can be found at www.philadelphiastreets.com.
As for curbside pickup of trees, Carlton says, "They will be picked up curbside but they won't be part of the recycling program."
