Camden Police Officers Spread Christmas Cheer To Underprivileged Children

By Mike Dougherty

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - Police Officers in Camden spent the final Sunday before Christmas passing out toys to underprivileged children in the city.

Santa, a couple of elves and Mrs. Claus loaded up the trucks with more than 500 toys and passed them out to families selected by community leaders.

"Having kids smile on Christmas is the best feeling ever," says Sgt. Bill Wiley. "Christmas is for kids."

Wiley says the toys were paid for by police officers who have been spending more time connecting with the community lately:

"A lot of times the families don't have any means to provide gifts for them. So just to see the reaction of the children is amazing."

Suzanne Moore is playing the role of Mrs. Claus and echoes that statement:

"I'm just trying to put some smiles on some little faces. We work in the city, all of us here, so it feels good to give back."

This is the first year of the program and Wiley says they will form a committee after the new year to plan a bigger and better toy give away for next Christmas.
