Poll: 56% Of New Jersey Residents Oppose Gas Tax Hike
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Nearly 60 percent of New Jersey residents surveyed oppose raising the gasoline tax.
A Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday finds 56 percent are against raising the 15-cent tax compared to 41 percent.
Lawmakers have discussed raising the tax to replenish the Transportation Trust Fund, which is running out of money.
The survey found 54 percent of residents polled say state roads are in good shape compared to 36 percent who say they are in fair condition. The result is virtually unchanged from a 1980 poll.
Poll director David Redlawsk says it's going to be a hard sell to convince New Jerseyans to pay more taxes if they don't think the roads are that bad.
The statewide poll of 750 residents has a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
