As AC Tries To Diversify, One Casino Announces Expansion Plans

By David Madden

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) - With all the bad news coming out of Atlantic City over the last few months, one casino hotel this week actually announced a plan to expand. It's part of the city's evolution away from gambling as the only reason to go there.

Resorts hopes to grab some of the east coast convention business with its newly announced $9.4-million project. Resorts CEO Mark Giannantonio says they'll add a dozen new meeting rooms, resulting in over 64,000 square feet of total convention space -- he hopes by next summer:

"We really were at our max capacity when it came to conventions that the property itself could do. Not because we didn't have the rooms, but we didn't have the meeting rooms."

But bathrooms are also being renovated in the hotel's Ocean Tower as part of the project.

Out in the marina, Harrah's has been building a new convention facility, at a cost of $126-million which is also expected to open next year.
