Phillies Lining Up For The Yasmany Tomas Sweepstakes

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There has been no secret that there are a number of Major League Baseball teams that are interested in acquiring the services of Cuban player Yasmany Tomas. The coveted outfielder is one of the top prizes of this off-season and it appears that a decision from Tomas may come very soon.

One of the teams interested in the young outfielder is the Phillies.

According to a report out of Vice Sports, Tomas is expected to fly to the United States on Friday to meet with his agent. The report also indicated that a deal may be finalized before the end of the weekend.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported that the Phillies are among a group of teams including the Giants and Padres that want Tomas to sign with them. The Dodgers, who struck it big with their own Cuban outfielder, Yasiel Puig, appear to be interested in trying to hit the lottery twice.

Tomas is only 24 years old. Because of his young age he could be the kind of player that signs two long-term deals with a franchise and becomes a cornerstone piece of a franchise if he reaches he full potential.

The Phillies' fan base desperately needs to be invigorated this off-season. The focus seems to be revolving around removing pieces to start the rebuild, but a player like Tomas with building block potential could give the fans some hope that the team could make a resurgence sooner rather than later.

We will all have to watch over the next few days to see if Tomas does indeed make his decision on where to begin his career in the United States.
