Villanova Steps Out Of League Saturday, Hosts Morgan State

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- The Villanova football team continues to gain momentum as they prepare to host Morgan State on Saturday for homecoming.

The Wildcats, ranked as high as #4 in FCS, improved to 6-1 (4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association) last weekend with a thrilling 35-31 win on the road at William and Mary.

"We played really hard, so did they," Villanova head coach Andy Talley tells KYW Newsradio. "They played a great game, it was homecoming, place was sold out, raucous crowd. We just hung in at the end. Down by four with a 1:52 left in the game, John (Robertson) drives the field in a minute, with no timeouts, and we score to go ahead. Then we held off two Hail Mary passes."

Villanova head coach Andy Talley talks to KYW's Matt Leon:

Robertson finished the game with two touchdown passes and a pair of touchdown runs, earning CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors for an amazing 5th time this season.

While the quarterback's magnificent play has grabbed most of the headlines, he is also being complimented by a solid group of running backs, led by senior Kevin Monangai. He tops the Wildcats with 441 yards rushing.

"Kevin had 17 carries for (78) yards (against William and Mary)," Talley says. "He's a workhorse. Gary Underwood has really risen, his level is excellent. And we have Austin Medley (ankle) back. So we have the best 1-2-3 punch we've ever had here."

Monangai ran for one score and caught a pass for another in Saturday's win.

Saturday's match-up with Morgan State will be the final non-CAA game of the regular season for the Wildcats. The Bears will come to town with a 4-3 record.

"They gave (FBS) Eastern Michigan a great game, (lost) 31-28, a school from the MAC," Talley says. "So they've got our attention. They are very well coached by a guy named Lee Hull, who was a great player at Holy Cross. They are big, fast and physical. We're going to have a game on our hands."

This will be the first ever meeting between these two programs.

Kickoff on the Main Line is set for 3:30pm.
