Suing Your Hairdresser

By Amy E. Feldman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Can you sue your hairdresser for a horrible haircut?

A Florida grandmother sued her salon for a thousand dollars after she got a haircut last month that she claims is "ruining her life". If you have had a bad haircut, can you sue your hairdresser? Yes, but you're not likely to win or at least not likely to win big money.

You can't just sue if you don't like your hair - you need to show that the hairdresser was negligent, and just because the picture in your mind doesn't match the hair on your head doesn't necessarily mean there was negligence involved.

But, even if a jury of your peers would agree that you look awful, and that your hairdresser was negligent, you still need to prove that you were harmed by a certain dollar amount.

The fact is, a bad haircut grows out and it would be hard to prove you're a thousand dollars harmed by your bad hair. The Florida grandmother's salon offered to buy her a wig - you know it's bad if the salon offers you a wig - and give her free hair treatments. She has so far refused.

Your best bet in the case of a bad haircut is to talk to the salon owner for a re-do of your new do. And remember, it's almost winter when hats will be back in style.
