Chip Kelly: 'We Don't Pay Attention To The Heat'

By Joseph Santoliquito

PHILADELPHIA, PA (CBS) — The Eagles are 5-1, and through the first five games this season, there might have been a number of questions how the Eagles got here, considering the way Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher have played, and the how the offense has stumbled.

But, apparently, Chip Kelly could care less what anyone thinks outside of the NovaCare Complex. The Eagles' coach bristled a little at listening to "the noise."

Kelly addressed the Darren Sproles injury against the Giants, which he said has an MCL sprain in his right knee and he could be back in a couple of weeks. Sproles was walking fine at the NovaCare Complex on Monday and there was no swelling.

Prior to the Eagles smashing the Giants 27-0 and becoming one of three NFL teams that sit at 5-1 (Dallas and San Diego being the others), there were some doubts as to how good the Eagles truly were.

Kelly refuted that. He said he didn't care. It's a team that's becoming more consistent, Kelly said, and he felt it was coming. Opinions outside the NovaCare Complex don't matter.

How do you explain that the Eagles reached 5-1?

"We don't have to explain; you are what you are," Kelly said. "I don't care. I have nothing to explain to anybody. We don't worry about that. We don't go in after a game and come up with let's tell everybody the reason why. We're 5-1—that's it. It doesn't matter. We don't have to explain it to anybody.

"Your record is what it is. We look at the standings and that's your record. We don't pay attention to it. There's noise out there that I think when you spend time on it, you're wasting time that you should be devoted towards developing a game plan for the Arizona Cardinals."

Kelly also addressed a few questions as to how cornerbacks Fletcher and Williams have been playing. How have they dealt with "the outside noise?"

"There's no reason to it; it doesn't make you a better player; it could make you a worse player to be honest with you," Kelly said. "The one thing we try to do is tune that out. I think as a coaching staff we've been very, very comfortable with Cary and Fletch, and I thought they played very well again. The only guys that they have to please are the guys in this building. I think both of those guys are doing a very good job; I'm happy with both of them."

"I think a lot of times, you guys [the media] are wrong; seriously. When we start listening to people outside of here, then we're going to be in trouble. Then we would be wrong. I think those guys have played really, really well.

"Praise and blame are all the same. If you let outside noise effect you, that means you value their opinion more than you value your own opinion. If that's the case, then your life is going to be up and down every single day. Someone said something good about me, I feel good about myself; someone said something bad about me, I feel crappy about myself.

"If that's the way you want to live your life, hang out with some very good people, because if not, you're going to have a real tough day. It's not easy. It's easier said than done and everyone understands that. When you put enough time and preparation in, then that's the confidence that you get. You don't get confidence because someone you don't know said that you had a good day or that you look good. That's a tough thing to learn and develop through time. Our guys have a good amount of confidence in themselves."

They should right now at 5-1.
