Police Say They Are Closing In on Elusive Cop-Killer in the Poconos

By Ian Bush

CANADENSIS, Pa. (CBS) -- Police in the Poconos insist they're homing in on the man they say ambushed and killed one Pennsylvania state trooper and left another wounded.

The search now focuses on a few square miles, as hundreds of officers scour parts of Monroe and Pike counties, in northeastern Pennsylvania.

"And I feel confident that we should be able to apprehend this individual," governor Tom Corbett said today.

Schools in that area are closed again out of security concerns, and authorities are warning neighbors to stay alert.

Gov. Corbett says Eric Frein's grudge is only with those who wear a badge.

"There were unarmed civilians right in the exact same location during the course of the shooting [at the Blooming Grove barracks], and he chose not to shoot at them," Corbett noted.

After the search team this weekend found an assault rifle and ammunition they believe Frein ditched or tried to hide, Pennsylvania State Police lieutenant colonel George Bivens says the hunt is narrowing.

"I do believe we are close to him at this point," Bivens said this morning.
