3 University Of Delaware Students Robbed Of Their Cell Phones At Gunpoint

By Todd Quinones

NEWARK, Del., (CBS) -- Police in Newark are investigating after three University of Delaware students were robbed of their cell phones by a man armed with a gun.

It's a scary scenario for students CBS 3 Eyewitness News talked to.

CBS 3 found several students walking and talking on their cell phones at the same spots where the robberies occurred, even after the University of Delaware sent out emails to students warning them.

Both armed robberies happened just off campus.

Sophomore Victoria Long was home when she received the alerts.

"It was a little nerve-racking and my parents were there when I received the alert. My dad was a little nervous about sending me back," she said.

A gunman approached two students from behind on South College Avenue near Winslow Road 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

He showed them a gun, forced the students to hand over their cell phones and he took off.

Then on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on Tyre Avenue near Main Street, a third student was robbed in a similar fashion.

Non-students are also worried.

"Somebody is robbing people at gunpoint, and I'm just like OK wow, what am I supposed to do now," Marcus Cassidy said.

A check of the numbers of the most recent statistics available, between 2010 and 2012, there were 10 robberies on campus and five robberies just off campus.

Students says the university regularly alerts them to crimes.

"We get the UD alerts which are great, but we never get a follow up, if they caught anybody or any suspects or anything like that," student Alex Wolf said.

The descriptions of the suspects are similar. Both are described as a black male with a large or muscular build about 5' 9" tall and between 25 – 30 years old. One suspect is described as having a goatee, the other with a full beard. It's not clear if it may be the same suspect involved in all of the robberies.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Newark Police.
