PECO Receives Hundreds Of Calls About 'Strange Odor'

By Matt Rivers, Andrew Kramer

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Officials with PECO say they received over 900 calls Saturday of a gas odor throughout several Pennsylvania Counties.

Officials say people have been calling in reports of the odor mostly in Montgomery County, but they also received calls in Delaware and Chester County.

PECO says they had trained response crews out in those areas investigating all day, but found no issues within their system.

As of Saturday night, PECO still couldn't pinpoint the problem or what exactly started it.

Alex Hart from Haverford tells CBA3 Eyewitness News he smelled gas in his basement beginning in the morning, but thought little of it. Then, he listened to his wife:

"A couple hours later she came in and said 'I don't want to worry you, but I think I smell gas in the basement'."

He then decided to call PECO, and 9-1-1 after that when PECO didn't answer right away.

Some of Hart's neighbors also spoke with CBS3 and expressed similar problems.

PECO says they will continue to investigate every call that comes in and are encouraging people to call them at 800-841-414 if they smell gas.

There have been no reports of evacuations as a result of the odor. PECO has extra staff members working at an emergency operation center.
