Business Owners, Beach-Goers Agree: It's Been A Great Summer Down The Shore

By Hadas Kuznits

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) - With Labor Day approaching, folks down the shore are getting ready to say goodbye to summer.

Many tell KYW Newsradio they get emotional this time of year:

"Yeah, I get sad."

"Because all our grandchildren go home."

"Going back to work and responsibility."

"Sorry to see summer end."

After all, as many agree, it's been a fantastic summer:

"Ah, it's been spectacular!"

"August has felt like September, it's been just beautiful. We've had great, sunny days."

"This has been the best summer weather-wise I think that we've had."

For business owners, the weather has been unbeatable:

"We've seen a lot of foot traffic. We were much more busy this year than last year," says Holly Kisby, general manager of Shriver's Taffy and Fudge in Ocean City. "I think this year we had a lot of great weather. I can't remember a lot of rainy days."

Kisby says the best part of summer for her is just seeing all the people:

"The beaches are crowded, the boardwalk is crowded, I think that was one of the best things."

Joseph DelSordo, owner of Del's Oceanside Grill says the summer of 2014 has been great for business:

"Business seemed to be a bit better than the last couple of years.  I find that probably we've had some of the most spectacular weather I've ever seen."

But he says there's still about another month before he closes the books:

"That could really make or break what the season's like, since September has become such an integral part of our quote unquote season so what I'm saying is, has it been a good season?  Yes, but September's what's going to make it a real good season."

Nevertheless, it looks like DelSordo will end the season in the black:

"Right now, I'm right on the edge of being a small percentage better (than last year) by maybe 5-percent," he says. "I'd like to see it higher, but it's better than being 5-percent below."

James Dougherty, assistant manager at Kohr Brothers Custard agrees that this has been one of the best seasons yet for business:

"Yes, it's been great.  There haven't been too many rain-outs."

And he, too, says business was much better this year than last.
