PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – On Friday, July 25th, a very sick little boy from Foxboro, Massachusetts will be celebrating his 6th birthday.

His wish? Getting lots of birthday cards.

So, when the children at a Cherry Hill sports camp heard about Danny Nickerson request, they decided to help make his day extra special.

Danny has an inoperable brain tumor. It’s a complicated diagnosis that was chronicled online at a website, Daniel’s Journey. By happenstance, a Facebook request caught the attention of counselors and children at the International Sports Center.

“The only thing he asked for, for his birthday was a mailbox full of birthday cards,” said Meghan Moriarty, a teen counselor.

It sounded like a mission.

Construction paper and colored pens in the hands of creative kids set out to lift the spirits of another kid, so far away.

Among the drawn rainbows and shining suns, the artistic results revealed young compassionate hearts.

Vaniece Washington wrote: “Keep your head high and stay strong, Love Vaniece.”

Aaron Arnstein pumped his fist in solidarity. “I want him to know that he can fight through this brain tumor and will survive for a long time.”

The camp’s goal is 400 birthday cards to be delivered for Danny’s Friday birthday in Foxboro, Massachusetts. To make the birthday delivery a surprise and on time, the Cherry Hill card writers have been busy.

“I wanted him to know that he’s not alone in the world,’ said Laurel Pondish, 10. “I just want him to feel better.”

Maddie Cunningham is 12 and wrote: “You’re one of the toughest and most amazing kids ever.”

As with anyone who understands the nature of “giving,” the  “return” can feel greater.

With her perfect braids and berets, Vaniece Washington had an observation that most adults overlook.

“I feel really special because I finally get to do something for someone in need.”

That someone is waiting for a birthday wish fulfilled.

If you’re interested in sending a card to Danny ’s the address is: Danny Nickerson, PO Box 212, Foxboro, MA 02035.

Tell him, CBS 3 sends their love too.
