Montco Sheriff Turns To Social Media To Corral Deadbeat Parents

By Brad Segall

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- The Montgomery County sheriff is stepping up its efforts on social media in an attempt to find deadbeat parents.

There are nearly 250 outstanding warrants for men and women who owe back child support payments totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The sheriff's department has done early-morning sweeps (see related story), but for those they can't find, they're hoping the public takes a look at their Facebook and Twitter accounts to see who they're looking for.

"Social media is very important to people's lives, and we know certain subjects do have Facebook pages, " notes Sgt. Joanne Plasterer.  "And we receive information, 'Hey this person has a Facebook page.' "

The public, she says, can submit tips over the phone, by e-mail, and on their web site in addition to their social media outlets.

Plasterer says the goal is to get all of the deadbeat parents so the children who are entitled to the support payments get what's due to them.
