Philly Summer Recreation Program Invites First Lady Michelle Obama

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia City Council's free summer program for kids is trying to entice first lady Michelle Obama to visit.

Kids taking part in City Council's summer activity program called "Philly Play" (see related story) are hoping to show off their new dance, agility, and basketball skills to Michelle Obama.

The children have put together a video inviting the first lady to the program's big finish on August 13th, at Vogt Recreation Center.

City councilman Bobby Henon, who founded Philly Play last year, is hopeful the first lady will come, as part of her campaign to battle childhood obesity.

"Due to security reasons, we may not find out until the last week (of the program)," Henon explained today.  "But I wanted to put it out there that we have invited the first lady.  This is in her wheelhouse.  This is something that she's done nationally."

We did not hear back from the first lady's office, but Henon is confident.

"I think she comes," he said today.
