Weekend Box Office Report: Top Spot Goes To Teen Romantic Drama

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)  --  A new teen romantic drama waltzed away with the top spot at the box office over the weekend.

The Fault in Our Stars, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, finished first by earning an estimated $48-million on its debut weekend.

Second place went to last weekend's leader, Maleficent, with Angelina Jolie. It had another good weekend, earning $34-million.

Third was the new science fiction thriller, Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. It took in a healthy $29-million in its debut.

And the holdover, X-Men: Days of Future Past, was fourth with $15–million.

Overall, continuing the trend of the summer movie season so far, industry-wide totals were well ahead of last year's pace.
