DEPTFORD, N.J. (CBS) — A special fundraiser is being held tonight for a scholarship in memory of Elwood, dubbed “the world’s ugliest dog.”
Elwood’s mom, Karen Quigley — a special education teacher at Gloucester County College, in Sewell, NJ — organized the event at the Adelphia Restaurant, in Deptford, to raise $10,000 to seed the scholarship.
Quigley says Elwood, who touched the hearts of both children and adults, died last Thanksgiving. And she says she wanted some way to pass along his legacy that it’s okay to be different.
“People are coming out to celebrate Elwood’s life, Elwood’s legacy, and hopefully, we’re going to reach… I think we’re going to go over our goal. I have a good feeling,” Quigley said today.
She says the scholarship will be awarded annually to a Gloucester County College student who has special needs of his or her own. And, she says, she’s especially looking for someone who also is volunteering time to help homeless animals.
