BENSALEM, Pa. (AP) — Authorities set up roadblocks when a young black bear appeared in a Philadelphia suburb, startling residents.

Police say the 175-to-200 pound bear was seen in the Bensalem area just before 9 a.m. on Friday morning. That’s about 18 miles northeast of Philadelphia, near the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

There were reports that the bear climbed over fences and walked down the street in a residential neighborhood, perhaps looking for food in trash. It then went into a wooded area. Police advised people in the area to stay inside, and the state Game Commission was notified.

Pennsylvania’s black bear population has grown from around 4,000 in the 1970s to around 14,000 today.
