Most Women Don't Know Warning Signs Of A Stroke

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This is a frightening statistic. Half of women don't know the warning signs of a stroke.

The reason why this is so frightening is because stroke kills more women than men - it is the third leading cause of female death. But, according to the American Heart Association, less than half of women know the signs.

Twelve thousand women were surveyed and only half the women identified sudden weakness or numbness and 44% identified difficulty with speech as a warning sign of a stroke.

It gets worse: less than 25% identified sudden headache, unexplained dizziness and sudden vision loss.

Remember, early treatment is the key to survival and reduction of symptoms.
