New Flea Market Set To Open On Part Of Atlantic City Race Track

By David Madden

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Plans are to open a new, weekends only flea market in May on a part of the Atlantic City Race Course. But the people behind it insist it's a lot more than that.

The Mercato Market, as it's being called, looks to pair quality merchandise with food, beer and free entertainment through December.

Dirk DaCosta is one of the co-owners, along with his wife Dina Guzzardo. They tried several locations that didn't quite work out, and then Dirk says Dina came up with an idea.

The Atlantic City Race Track isn't doing much these days," he said. "Wouldn't that be a marriage made in heaven? And, of course, when we approached them it was."

More than 500 vendors have already signed up. They have room for about 300 more, but expect to be at full capacity by opening weekend.

"We get a ton of referrals from vendors who have already signed up," said Dina. "They refer other vendors to us. Not a day goes by that we don't sign up another 15, 20, 30 vendors."

Opening day is set for May 3rd -- when noted rock guitarist Eddie Berner of Flock of Seagulls fame brings his reality TV cooking show to the track.
