University of the Sciences Hosts Pre-College Conference For High School Students

By Brad Segall

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS) - High school students and their parents from throughout the Philadelphia region are being urged to show up this weekend at a pre-college conference being hosted by the University of the Sciences in University City.

The college admissions process can be difficult to navigate, so the free 'Step Into College' event Saturday is designed to give students in grades 9-12 a chance to speak with experts about how to apply for financial aid, how to fill out the applications, and how to determine what college or university is the best fit.

University of the Sciences director of government and community affairs Mary Kate McGinty says they can also speak with current college students.

"What we're calling a real talk session where the students can ask their sort of their peers things that they'd like to know, get the inside scoop," she said.

McGinty says the event is especially important for Philadelphia students because the counselors who are still there after funding cuts made by the district are overwhelmed with a large number of students.
